Crusoe’s – Le Touessrok Want to play at being Robinson Crusoe, but kinda want someone to bring you a chilled glass of rosé and a plate of grilled fresh local lobster with salad at the same time? Welcome to Crusoe’s Bar on Ilot Mangenie!

Just off the East Coast of Mauritius at Trou d’Eau Douce, and part of the Le Touessrok resort, Crusoe’s is one of the resort’s (and indeed the island’s) best kept secrets. Not particularly child-friendly (other beaches are swept daily for sea urchins) Ilot Mangenie is the totally private, exclusive beach bar for the use of Le Touessrok’s residents. It’s not open to the public and is only accessible by speedboat from the resort jetty on the mainland which leaves every 20 minutes. Your sunlounger companions are likely to be chic french, British bankers, German industrialists and a smattering of Speedo-wearing Russians.

Don’t be concerned about missing the last boat back (usually around 4:30/5:00pm, depending on the tide), as the kind and polite staff will give you a gentle shake on the shoulder to wake you up from your post-lobster, post-rosé-induced slumber. They’ll even bring you plenty of fresh towels and loan you beach shoes to walk out to the reef.

Food and drink? – simple, but spectacular. Head honcho on the island – Robinson (yes, that is his name) – will mix whatever drink takes your fancy, so long as he has the ingredients. And Pierre, the long-standing chef, knows what his target audience wants. Fresh lobster, griant grilled prawns, grilled fish and a few oddities, all served with local stir-fried vegetables or salad. Fancy chips or great bread? Just ask and they’ll sort it out. Magic!

Open: 365 days. Around 11am – 4:30 or 5. Not so child-friendly, but plenty of child-friendly options close by.

Price: Expensive.
