Islamorada – Lorelei’s

Islamorada lays claim to the title “Big Game Fishing Capital of the World” and to be honest, I’ve never seen so many small boats per square mile.

Hidden amongst the cheesy motels and the Dairy Queens lies the lovely Lorelei’s, a bar which started out life as yes, you’ve guessed it, a bait and tackle shop.

An Islamorada institution for over 50 years, Lorelei’s was blown away by the 1960 hurricane Donna, landing on the other side of the key only to be rebuilt in the same location a year later. Local salty sea dogs say that since then the place has grown steadily to now encompass not only a great waterfront bar but also a restaurant, live music stage and a white sand beach.

Open every day and child-friendly (on the sandy beach area only), Lorelei’s serves great seafood including those infamous Florida Stone Crabs (from October to May) alongside the usual North American cocktail and beer selections.
