La Piaggia looks chic. It looks expensive. It has wall-to-wall Ferraris parked outside. It looks private – members only. And there’s a Members Only Private Club sign on the wooden door. But you know what? It’s not!
La Piaggia IS chic and expensive but also child-friendly and open to both the general public (if you’re dressed right – for the dress code, channel the bastard offspring of Gianni Versace and Melissa Odabash and you’ll be most of the way there!) and visitors from the neighbouring Murano hotel. With a vibe transported directly from St Tropez, owner Robert Pascal has managed to bring a tasteful slice of Mediterranean life directly to Miami’s South Beach.
Facing South West, La Piaggia witnesses those glowing red sunsets only to be found in South Florida accompanied by a back-drop of passing cruise ships as they leave the harbour. I got the feeling that maybe the clientele met each other in the child-free Nikki Beach in their twenties then had kids and now go to La Piaggia for an elegant Sunday lunch where they can let their children safely roam free on the white sand “beach” or in the small pool. What to eat? Well, I watched a huge Chilean sea bass being expertly filleted and saw plenty of ice buckets filled with the house rosé.
In summary…La Piaggia, Beach Club – and cigar.
